Sammy
was a big spoiled baby. Big because he
weighed in at almost 115 pounds; and
spoiled because he had his own bed. "So
what?" you say, "my dog has his own bed
also!" Well, is that bed a regular
human bed? Sammy’s was!
Unfortunately, Sammy’s human was sick
and had to enter a hospice. Sammy
couldn’t go and relatives couldn't take
him in either. So Sammy ended up as a
ward of the state at the local shelter.
The
officers at the shelter fell in love
with Sammy. They described him as a
big, cuddly teddy bear who LOVED
attention.
Much
to the family's relief, the shelter
knew about and contacted GRRI-NJ.
A
couple of weeks into his GRRI-NJ foster
care, it appeared that Sammy was going
to be adopted. Fate, however, had
a different plan: the initial
adopter backed out.
Then
one of our volunteers saw Sammy’s
picture and fell in love ... (who
could resist that face!) but he wasn't
sure he was ready to adopt a senior, as
he had just lost one of his Goldens not
a month before.
Happily, all doubts were cast
aside when he met Sammy at a GRRI-NJ
foster home training function. Sammy
was a perfect gentleman at the event
until it came time for a play break.
That's when Sammy got hold of a toy and
would not give it up ... to anyone ...
anyone, that is, except the very person
who was considering adopting him!
With
that good omen between them, there was
only one other step remaining.
Sammy would have to pass muster with his
current Golden, who had never really
gotten along with other male dogs.
All went well at the meeting a week
later ... and Sammy was in his
forever home!
We
hear that Sammy is still a big spoiled
baby, but fortunately, not as big
as he was. He lost about thirty pounds
but his coat is still so thick that he
still looks like a big, cuddly teddy
bear!
