In July 2004 GRRI
received a call from a shelter about a
male Golden who desperately needed our
help. Volunteers arrived to find this
gentle senior in deplorable physical
condition. His eyes and ears were raw
and oozing with infection. His body was
covered with staph infections, and large
areas were missing fur. His skin was
black from years of infection. His
name, we were told, was Tiger.
Tiger was placed in a
foster home and immediately taken to a
vet. He was given medication to treat
his bilateral ear and eye infections,
antibiotics to treat the staph, and
special oatmeal shampoos to soothe his
skin. He had arthritis in his rear legs
so he was also placed on Glucosamine and
Chondroitin, and put on a high quality
dog food. In addition to all his
medical care, Tiger was also showered
with love and affection by his foster
family.
Tiger’s condition
continued to improve and it was time to
find his forever home. But then he
surprised us by coming down with a very
serious medical condition - stones in
his urethra. He was taken to a
urologist who declared that Tiger was
almost completely blocked and would need
surgery both to remove the stones and to
create a new urethra. The surgery was a
success. At this point we also felt
that Tiger was suffering from severe
food allergies, so a special food
allergy test was done. He was indeed
allergic to quite an array of
ingredients, and the proper food was
selected. Once again we attempted to
find this sweet, gentle senior a forever
home.
In December, a former
GRRI-NJ adopter read about Tiger and
asked if they could grant him his one
wish – to be in his new forever home for
Christmas. When the potential adopters
came to meet him, he knew in an instant
that this was his new family. His
foster mom reported that he broke out
into a joyous Golden grin and went right
up to claim them as his own. It was
the perfect match and home he went.
They re-named him Murphy.
Murphy is very happy in
his new home. He has a kitty to play
with, a human “grandma” to be with him
during the day, and two “parents” who
adore him. He got everything that he
asked for on his Christmas wish list.
