We called him Big
Bob
-- because he was BIG! At 158 pounds, he
was the largest golden we'd ever
taken into rescue. He
was a young stray taken from the Paterson shelter. It took two
policemen and a GRRI-NJ
volunteer to lift him into our volunteer's truck. Once
in there, he barely fit and
could hardly turn around. He didn't fit into the volunteer's
largest crate.
The first
stop on his journey to forever was at the vet's office. It took nearly two hours there
to shave off enough mats so the doctor could determine his sex and allow the dog to
go to the bathroom. Bob was matted into a kneeling position -- he couldn't even stand
up. The exam showed that Big Bob had bi-lateral ear infections, un-descended testicles,
and no hair on his tail. Throughout this entire ordeal, Bob never complained and continued to
give kisses.
An adoptive
family was able to see through the fat, the hair, the grime and yes, the smell. Big
Bob's sweet disposition and gentle nature convinced them to give him a chance.
Big Bob,
renamed Maxx, began his new life on a 50-acre horse farm. Maxx spent his
first day sniffing everything he saw, taking drinks from his very own huge bowl of
water, sitting on the deck in the sun, watching rabbits, squirrels and birds, and
taking naps on his blanket.
His new
friend Solitaire, a Brittany Spaniel, has successfully taught Maxx to
play ball and the fundamentals of
digging. He's learned to
bark, and to swim in his domed, year-round heated pool. His new family finds his enthusiasm
for life very amusing.
Last
but not least, Maxx also lost a ton of
weight and got into great shape.
YAY Maxx!
