She'd been purchased at a pet store … then returned only weeks later when her owners discovered she had cancer of the jaw. That's when GRRI-NJ and members of The Garden State Golden Retriever Club stepped in to give her a true second chance at life.

Some of GSGRC 's members donated the funds to GRRI-NJ needed to pay for Maizie's surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Susan Mitchell, a visiting vet from Tuft's Veterinary Hospital in Boston, observed the surgery and fell under Maizie's spell.

She adopted this lucky little pup from GRRI-NJ and brought her home with her to Boston. Maizie is now living happily-ever-after with Susan's two other dogs and two cats. She romps in meadows and cornfields every weekend.

Maizie has also since undergone extensive jaw reconstruction surgery, including a graft of bone from her  own rib. She recovered beautifully, and according to her owner  "Maizie now has a normal jaw line just like other dogs. She looks terrific!"
