In August 2004 GRRI-NJ received a call
about an 11-year-old Golden in need of a
new home. The family was moving
and couldn't take her with them.
They also had a baby who was allergic to
dogs so they knew they had to find the
dog a new home.
Two GRRI-NJ volunteers went to meet
Holly. She was a sweet senior
Golden who didn't know her age.
She would run and retrieve tennis balls
day and night. She loved people,
other dogs and children.
When Holly first arrived at her foster
home she seemed a bit lost. She
didn't know why she was there, but
within a few short days, she was acting
like part of the family. She
followed the resident dog around
faithfully, and just naturally did what
ever he did.
Her foster family quickly discovered
that Holly's affectionate nature
extended from snuggles to ball playing.
She ran to get the tennis balls
like she was still a puppy and brought
them to her foster family and visitors for
attention all day long. And she romped
and played with her 4-year-old Golden
brother, Parker, constantly.
If Holly was old, her foster family
realized, someone clearly forgot to tell
her!
All the while, Holly longed for a home
of her own. She would sleep with
her little paw curled up over her nose
like she was hiding from the world that
had left her without a home.
Though
Holly only wanted a place to hang her
leash and gets lots of love, she wasn't
young. A dog that's 11-years-old
isn't easy to place, even with a lot of
playful puppy still in her.
Her foster home dressed her up as a
pumpkin for Halloween and we put her
picture on our website. We thought
that surely someone would fall for that
adorable silly dog in a pumpkin suit!
But no one did ...
After 3 months of foster care, Holly was
coming to love this family more
and more. And on Thanksgiving she
became an official member of the family
forever. Holly
and her new family had a lot to be
thankful for.
Her new Mom reports that Holly is a
shining example of why everyone should
open their home to a senior.
Though most adopters want a young dog,
they just don't know what they're
missing. Holly is a total love,
and demonstrates every day just how much
joy white faces bring when they worm
their way into our hearts.
She is proof beyond compare that Old
Gold Shines Brightest.
