GRRI-NJ was working with the Humane
Society of Tinton Falls in June 2004,
helping to place a seven year old male
when our intake volunteer was told that
the shelter also had a six year old
unspayed female, Cookie, that had been
brought in. Cookie’s surrendering owner
claimed she was not good with other
animals. The shelter workers had not
seen any evidence of this at all in the
six days she had been there and asked if
we might be able to help her. It was
also apparent that Cookie had just
recently had a litter of pups and would
need to be spayed. Three volunteers
went to the shelter to do her evaluation
and found a calm, mild mannered female
who did not show any signs at all of
aggression and judging by her lack of
responsiveness to petting and loving,
seemed to have lacked affection in her
previous life. Based on the shelter’s
evaluation and our own evaluation, we
accepted Cookie into rescue.
We had
a prospective adoptive couple for Cookie
and they were very anxious to meet her.
It was love at first sight! Since
Cookie still needed to be spayed, the
couple agreed to a foster-to-adopt
arrangement. After a favorable
evaluation by a professional trainer
from St Hubert’s and her spaying, Cookie
was officially adopted in July 2004.
Her new “pawrents” soon discovered the
true Cookie – gentle and playful, calm
yet energetic … and a great swimmer!
She quickly took to swimming in their
indoor pool and displayed impressive
diving form! Cookie’s new family spends
several months each year in Arizona so
after her recuperation, it was off on a
cross-country drive to her other new
home.
Cookie
settled in to her very comfortable life
in Arizona – swimming, going to the dog
park, hiking, enjoying the wonderful
weather – but there was also work to be
done. During the late fall and early
winter, Cookie was working on getting
her Canine Good Citizen certification
and passed with flying colors in January
2005. Then in February, she started
taking classes to become a certified
therapy dog and passed her test to be a
Pet Partner with the Delta Society in
mid-March. Congratulations to Cookie
and her proud parents! We’re sure
she’ll spread sunshine and smiles
wherever she goes.
