It isn't every day that  GRRI-NJ gets to tell a three dog success story.  But these three have all hit it big!!!

Meet Chloe, Montana & Maggie, three very lucky Goldens.  Their story actually started in 2002 when their forever family, the Bergners,  adopted an 8-year-old Golden named Tao from GRRI-NJ.  Tao was not the first senior dog that this wonderful couple adopted.   They already knew the joys of adopting older dogs and giving them the love and care they deserve in their senior years.

In January of 2004, the Bergners contacted us again to let us know that they wanted to adopt another senior Golden to join Tao, Gideon, and Stanley in their family.    They figured four dogs would be a perfect fit -- that way they could walk two at a time!

Lucky dog number four was Maggie. GRRI-NJ had gotten a call from a kennel where two dogs had been abandoned by their owner.  GRRI-NJ took Maggie into foster care and found another rescue to take her pal, a very nice female pit bull.

Maggie came into foster care with infected ears,  a major case of the itches, and a badly infected toe. But after being spayed and a treated for her medical issues, Maggie was ready for adoption.    The Bergners were all set to come and get her ... when they got some horrible news.  Their Tao had terminal cancer.  He was given only weeks to live and they felt they needed to wait to adopt.   Maggie was disappointed but knew she would be happy and safe in her foster home for a while longer.

Two weeks later GRRI-NJ got sad news from the Bergners that Tao had passed away.  They asked if Maggie was still available.  GRRI-NJ asked if they were sure they wanted another senior dog  -- and they said, of course!

Maggie just loves her new home, where she can chase squirrels as often as she likes.  She is known as “The Great Golden Hunter”.

That Memorial Day all three dogs went to the beach in North Carolina on vacation.  There they happened to learn of a 6-year-old female Golden named Honey in need of a home at the local shelter.  They quickly went and got her.  Sadly Honey also had cancer and although they did  all they could for her, she passed away in the fall of 2004.

This poor couple had lost three dogs in less than a year.

GRRI-NJ had just found out that one of our foster dogs Dolly was having puppies  (see Dolly’s story)  The Bergners jumped at the chance to adopt one of the puppies,  but also  told us “We’ll take another senior too.”

That lucky senior was 10-year-old-Montana.  Montana's foster dad reported that Montana was a perfect Golden gentleman.  He got along great with his two senior foster siblings and loved attention.  He was a very spry 10 -year-old who loved to go for walks and check everything out.

The Bergners fell for him immediately, but then he had to pass the 'leash walk' test with their three other senior dogs -- Maggie, their GRRI-NJ Golden,  Stanley, their  lab mix, and Gideon, their beagle mix.  Thankfully, Montana passed with flying colors and everybody left happy ...  although a little more cramped on the drive home.  Montana is a pretty big boy!

In December of 2004 Dolly delivered her puppies. And on January 29 2005, the Bergners brought puppy Chloe home to meet the rest of the gang.

Little Chloe melts everyone’s heart.  And she will never have to sit in a pet store window or live a life of breeding in a puppy mill.  As for the other Goldens, Maggie would rather play with the squirrels then Chloe, but Montana has taken her under his wing.  He is a very proud big brother and loves his new little sister.

Now the Bergners  have 5 rescued dogs. What a loving family, and what a great life these dogs  have.
