Shane was a typical bouncy 8-month-old
Golden Retriever puppy, full of love
and exhuberance ... but with very bad
hips. So bad, his owners left him at
a veterinary office to be put down in
late October, 2004. Thankfully, two
concerned vet techs, Carey and Betty,
called GRRI-NJ instead.
When
our volunteer met Shane, she could see
the orthopedic problems right away.
Shane refused to bear weight on his
left hip; x rays confirmed the ball
was completely out of the socket on
his left side ... so who could blame
him. And he wasn't doing much better
with his right hip, which was also
dysplastic, though not as severely as
his left. (Read

After more x-rays and consultation
with several orthopedic veterinary
specialists, Shane was scheduled for
bilateral TPO surgery. While he was
under he also got neutered.
Shane was definitely one sore pup
afterwards, but his prognosis for a
complete recovery was excellent!
Just
2 days post op, he was already
standing, though he did need to be
supported with a towel when he walked.
A
month later, he was well, and adopted!
Yay for Shane!
